What do the words of the adhan mean in English?

Image
Muslims use the human voice to announce the times of prayer to the community. The  adhan  is the call to prayer itself, and the person who calls it is called the  muadhan . The following is the Arabic transliteration and the English translation of what you hear: Allahu Akbar God is Great (said four times) Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah I bear witness that there is no god except the One God.(said two times) Ashadu anna Muhammadan Rasool Allah I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God. (said two times) Hayya 'ala-s-Salah Hurry to the prayer (Rise up for prayer) (said two times) Hayya 'ala-l-Falah Hurry to success (Rise up for Salvation) (said two times) Allahu Akbar God is Great [said two times] La ilaha illa Allah There is no god except the One God For the pre-dawn  (fajr)  prayer, the following phrase is inserted after the fifth part above, towards the end: As-salatu Khayrun Minan-nawm Prayer is better...

Beautiful Hadith is about Ramadan and Shawwal

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan) observe fast. and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal) break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days. (Muslim - Book 13, Hadith 20)

Names of Allah

Image
In the Qur'an, Allah uses dozens of different "names" or attributes, to describe Himself to us. These names help us to understand God's nature in terms that we can understand. These names are known as  Asmaa al-Husna  (The Most Beautiful Names). Some Muslims believe that there are ninety-nine such names for God, based on one statement of the Prophet Muhammad. However, the published lists of names are not consistent; some names appear in some lists but not others. There is not a single agreed-upon list which includes only 99 names, and many scholars feel that such a list was never explicitly given by the Prophet Muhammad. The list below consists of the most common and agreed-upon names, which were explicitly stated in the Qur'an or hadith. Allah  -  The single, proper name for God in Islam Ar-Rahman  -  The Compassionate, The Beneficent Ar-Raheem  -  The Merciful Al-Malik  -  The King, The Sovereign Lord Al-Quddoos ...

Anger Management in Islam

During the fast of Ramadan, Muslims strive to exercise control over their most basic human urges -- not only abstaining from food and drink, but also attempting to control their emotions.  Everyone gets angry from time to time, some more than others, but during Ramadan an outburst of anger will break your fast just as surely as drinking water.  Islamic wisdom provides guidance for Muslims who struggle to control this negative, damaging emotion – during Ramadan and throughout the year. The Quran describes the believers as “those who spend freely, whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon all men. Allah loves those who do good” (3:134). Importance Why is anger negative and damaging? Outbursts of anger hurt people around you, especially those who are closest to you. You may become verbally or physically abusive, when you normally are not so. Carrying anger around can become chronic, with damage to your own health and well-being. Also on t...

What Does the Quran Say About Envy?

In the Quran, envy is described as an emotion that is worthy of God's condemnation. With envy in one's heart, one starts to question the wisdom of Allah's blessings. One cannot feel envious towards another person without asking, "why not me?" It is not our place to question Allah's wisdom, but to have faith that Allah knows best. “Say: ‘Verily, my Sustainer has forbidden only shameful deeds, be they open or secret, and every kind of sin, and unjustified envy, and the ascribing of divinity to others beside Him…” (7:33). “Out of their selfish envy, many among the followers of earlier revelation would like to bring you back to denying the truth after you have attained to faith - even after the truth has become clear unto them. Nonetheless, forgive and forbear, until God shall make manifest His will: behold, God has the power to will anything (2:109). “Behold, Allah enjoins justice, and the doing of good, and generosity towards one's fellow-men. And H...

What Does the Quran Say About Charity?

Islam calls upon its followers to reach out with open hands, and give in charity as a way of life. In the Quran, charity is often mentioned along with prayer, as one of the factors that identifies true believers. In addition, the Quran frequently uses the words “regular charity,” so charity is best as an ongoing and consistent activity, not just a one-off here and there for a special cause.  Charity should be part of the very fiber of your personality as a Muslim. The Quran also reminds that we should be humble about our offerings of charity, not embarrassing or injuring the recipients. Charity is mentioned dozens of times in the Quran.  The passages below are only from the second chapter, Surah Al-Baqarah. "Be steadfast in prayer, practice regular charity, and  bow down your heads with those who bow down (in worship)" (2:43). "Worship none but Allah. treat with kindness your parents and kindred, and orphans and those in need; speak fair to the peo...
